Some days are brutal! I know you know what I mean. We’ve all had them! I’ve had so many metaphors run through my head for how this feels.

Keeping your head above water when the world is pushing you under. (I thought it sounded to much related to cash)

When you feel like a bobbing yo-yo. (a what?)

That’s enough of that, the title says enough – like that song, “I get knocked down, but I get up again. You’re never going to keep me down.”

This is where it gets challenging. Now I’m supposed to tell you how. But what if? What if the advice I give you, that works for me, and works for six other people, doesn’t work for you, nor 567 others? Oops.

Screw it. I’m not here to tell anyone what to do. I’m just telling some stories. Your truth will speak to you, maybe the writing will help call it out. Let’s give it a try.

Entrepreneurship is a challenging road, and here’s the thing: Life is tough enough without any of us wanting to make it harder. But who knew when we were young, ambitious, courageous, naive, trusting, and invulnerable? I didn’t know; I lived and breathed optimistic spontaneity. It is true – anything is possible – provided . . . . . .

Ha! What is that about?

Timing, opportunity, location, and a whole host of variables exist beyond our control. Anything can happen, and one decision can take you so far from experiences that may be extraordinarily beneficial at some later date in your life. And yet, who knew? Who knows? I’ve found myself, at 43, looking back upon one decade or another and seeing how small choices have had extraordinary results – both positive and negative – in my life. As for getting knocked down, I’ve been knocked down hard – a few times.

These days, great things are happening. The odd part of that is the vulnerability that I experience. Imagine I could fly.

In order to fly I must leap out off a cliff into open space spread-eagle. Yes, that is exactly what I mean by this vulnerable experience. Now, once I’m out there, I must remain spread-eagle in order to soar and stay aloft. Yes, I’m floating in space, defying gravity, soaring above the earth, and I feel an instinctual impulse to withdraw myself into a cannonball in some crazy response to the alarm of defying gravity.

Who said I couldn’t fly? Who said you couldn’t fly? I can see many people who’ve suggested such things to me in the past, growing up and in adulthood. Did that necessarily stop me? Rarely. Most often I would dig my heels in and hear this spirited internal response, “I’ll show you,” or “I’ll show them.” So could I honestly buy the idea that it is people today that are slowing me down or blocking my way? Partly, but very minor in their roles, as the power choice is wholeheartedly my own.

So what happened? I freak out sometimes, I panic, I worry, I cry, I get angry. Okay, I admit it: I’m human. Yes, there have been experiences in my past that haunt my todays. You see? That’s it, right there. On up days, it’s full steam ahead. On low energy days, those ghosts from our past tease at us.

When life is overall running quite smoothly, we weather these transitions with the ups and downs much more easily. When there is some big stuff going on, or has been for a while, this can become progressively challenging. And it is always boiling down to how you respond, in order to determine the outcome of each life chapter. Things getting more negative? Take a close look at your thoughts and patterns. Things improving? You know what I mean.

Whether knocked down, getting up, or staggering along, just remember to do just that: stagger along, keep focused on here and now. Push the feelings, fears, worries aside, and look at you and your choice to experience goodness. Let go and enjoy where you are, while learning to relax into the unfolding of the next moment. This isn’t always easy for a worrier – trust me, I know – but putting a conscious effort to it, becoming aware of it, builds up the ability.

And don’t beat yourself up over it. I used to beat myself up for having lost what I once had. Life, she’s a grand and demanding mistress, offering the ride of a lifetime.

Can One Person Make a Difference?

Do you know how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly? The process of changes from crawling creature to graceful wonder is an excellent metaphor to reflect upon. The answer is simple, and yet profound: caterpillars become butterflies through the effort of but a handful of determined cells.

Here’s how it happens: when the time for metamorphosis arrives, caterpillars develop what are called “imaginal cells.” Imaginal cells represent the more advanced version of the caterpillars body — that of a butterfly’s. I guess you can say that the imaginal cells are those with the dream; the cells that want something more for the caterpillar, something better. However, in the beginning, the caterpillars immune system would consider the imaginal cells as the enemy — foreign bodies — and will attempt to destroy them. Some of the imaginal cells will die,but others will survive. And those that survive will transform the old caterpillar cells one by one, until they develop a critical mass and become so strong, the caterpillar’s body will have to give in! And he’ll be glad he did!

Amazing, isn’t it? So, can one person make a difference? The answer is a resounding “yes!”

Transforming the world seems like an impossible task at first. It’s far easier to say there’s nothing we can do, that age-old systems are way stronger, that the battle is lost even before it’s begun. But what we need to do, when reflecting on the question “can one person make a difference?” is think like the caterpillar’s imaginal cells. When we aim for progress, we’ll lose some battles and we’ll win others. But if we’re persistent enough, we’ll attract like-minded individuals, and become powerful enough to make an impact in the world.

Everything can start with one voice, right?

Would you like to start making a difference in the world today? You don’t need to solve third world hunger or jumpstart world peace overnight. In effortless ways you can show the world how it’s done. The following are 7 simple ways you can change the world from where you sit:

Appreciate one person a day. You’ll be surprised how much a sincere compliment can transform another person’s day! Your little boy might be nursing a rejection from his crush, but a kind word from you may encourage him to try again. Your favorite waitress may be ready to buckle from life’s pressures, but a “thank you” may just make her hang on. Appreciation is cheap; you won’t even have to take out your wallet to give one!

Never drink and drive. Do you know that around 60,000 people a year die from alcohol-related motor accidents? While it takes pride to admit that you’re too drunk to take the wheel, your insight can save another person’s life and another family’s grief. Can one person make a difference by not driving when intoxicated? YES. By being conscientious with the simple choices that we make, we can cut down the tragedies that happen to people on a daily basis.

Bring a bag when you shop. We only have one earth, and it’s time we take care of it! So instead of adding in to the tons of plastic garbage that will take millions of years to degrade, do your bit for the environment. Bring a recyclable bag whenever you get groceries. And if you can convince your neighbors to do the same, the Mother Nature will surely be grateful.

Donate your excess to a homeless shelter. Do you have extra clothing just gathering dust in your closet? Or perhaps you overstocked on goods and food products? It’s a crime to hoard when so many people are doing without. Take time to give of what you can to charity. What may be clutter to you is a lifeline to others.

Deal with clients ethically. When the economy is headed south, it’s tempting to engage in shaky business tactics. You may water down your products to cut cost, circumvent safety regulations that you need to follow,or use dishonest methods to sell that used car. Don’t! It’s when budgets are tight that we need more people who create value without selling out! What goes around comes around. Businessmen when asked “can one person make a difference?” know that an ounce of ethics can go a long, long way.

Share a story of resilience. The world needs more people who can teach about life — something even the internet can’t teach! If you know someone in bad need of quality advice — say, a rebellious teen in your neighborhood or a co-worker in the throes of depression, take time to share what you know. Don’t worry too much about saying the right thing — if you’re sincere in our desire to help, it will come across.

Tell an enemy that you forgive them. Lastly, if you want to make a difference in another person’s life, do what you can to give them closure. We may be victims of an offense or abuse, but it doesn’t mean we can’t be generous and offer our victimizers the opportunity to move on. They may not appreciate it at first, but who knows: your forgiveness may be just what they’re waiting for so that they can get on with their life.

In conclusion, can one person make a difference? Yes. Through one determined effort at a time!

For the sake of writing! There has been a hesitancy, even a fear or sense of dread, about writing on the blog pages of One Man Can. You see, the whole premise of the site, the writing, the coaching, the encouragement, was and is intended to lift people up, challenge people positively with their thinking, relationships, and professions. Instead, I found my own life being challenged and myself having difficulty being positive with the unfolding painful experiences.

All these ego busters and spiritual gurus telling us that it is all ego tends to become a real pain in the buttocks. As difficult as it is, the physical experience, the emotional experience, the mental experience, are all very persistent and real. I also know for a certain fact that many of these spiritually evolved people has demonstrated their own ego frailty just as easily as I do. Some just get over it quicker, others process differently, and some avoid it altogether, including the situations and people who might trigger their hot buttons. Me, I avoid public contact more than I should.

Well, time runs its own course if you’re not running your own show, and my ride still took me where I wanted to go, even though I didn’t know through the fog of my own changing confusion. Isn’t this what it is to come back to yourself? Conditioned by the system, the beliefs we grew up with, the education and social norms, so that you’ll fit some traditional mold so someone can bring cake to the party. When in reality, there was something very unique to you that wants to bust loose and live the life you were born to live.

You can fight it all you want. You can drink it — or yourself to be more precise — into oblivion, or you can get up and start walking that path. Everything that happens along the way is a guidepost along your path. The only question really is whether or not you have the courage to take it, and then to keep forging on ahead when you think you’ve got no more left in you.

I know you can do it. Do you?

Okay, so bad pun! I gotta play with what I got and get the juices flowing again!

Of course, with the fingers off the keyboard, the mind was dancing with many turns of phrases that told a story. Laptop not ready, clumsy fingers on a tiny keyboard, and no notepad in sight. What was it? I can’t help but wonder.

Nonetheless, with the keys finding their way through the telling of this moment, a lesson is learned about inspiration, regaining a foothold on what seemed a slippery surface, and letting the moment carry you through it. There is always good to come from everything if you can let go and flow with the moment.

A writer has to write, and even when the mind tricks us into believing nothing good will happen, the fingers will tell an entirely different story. That’s flowing!

Whenever things aren’t going well in life, it can be observed long after we’ve survived the struggle that all we had to do was make a change we didn’t want to, or were struggling with, or didn’t want to change. As the year of transitions to end a decade of transitions continues, I have at times been perplexed at the trouble climbing the hill. Try as I might, I kept stumbling and falling down.

Recently, the work, work, work, push, push, push, method I’d been adhering to crushed me with tension, headache, backache, etc. Yes, we’re pushing a new project up a steep hill and there are times when we can put in the extra effort. This wasn’t just putting in the extra effort. It was the underlying fear driving that effort. It isn’t a sustainable energy – it is a destructive energy. Turning it around, takes the indirect approach.

Balance is key and self-care is key. That fear suggested at a lack of trust – at its basic root – toward myself and my abilities to meet the challenges of each day and my future. Ultimately, that is at the core, even where other circumstances may also be present. It has taken a few conversations with some good people to gain perspective, to see what I was missing, and to relax into the positive nature that the proactive steps embarked upon months ago materialized today. Taking a breath, it is easier to see the other areas of life still in deep neglect.

Time distribution values all areas of One’s Own Life:

Physical Well-Being

eating regularly and healthily

getting enough sleep

following as regular a routine as possible

getting some exercise

Mental Well-Being

time alone to process, reflect, and let go

time to be creative and to recreate

stimulation from diverse sources of interest and exposure

develop the ability to quiet the noise

clear the clutter – physical spaces affect mental spaces (subjective levels of experience)

like-minded people for increased clarity

diverse people for challenge and growth

Emotional Well-Being

find ways to give to the people around you

participate in community life

share your love (for things, subjects, places, pursuits, people, etc.)

find your physical expression partner – get over your belief blocks

be honest to yourself

stay in your integrity (true to your values, your heart, your gut, your instinct – not by another’s value of integrity)

As with most things, I’m certain you have more to add to the list. These are some of the things I’ve recognized the most over the years.

The death of a culture, or society, is not a pleasant thought. Yet, looking at history, it can also be seen as an evolution of people. From world wars, civil wars, civil unrest, and demonstrations, we have been witness to major influences upon the course of history through cataclysmic events of varying degrees across various levels.

In our culture, of self-improvement, performance measurement, education, business, and politics, there has been a shifted focus from people to systems. With systems and improvements we strive to simplify and streamline life, and in doing so, put people into the boxes that make the streamlined system go. The round pegs are filling the square holes.

Getting people excited about change is difficult, and initially we have done well in our history. As we focus more marketing, motivation, mentorship, education, and relationships based upon fear, lack, and respect, we lose the value-add element of the creative human. Looking over the past decade or two, I can see the increasing levels of conflict in the human psyche. There is a cost to making people conform to a system.

The flaw is simple. Humans are evolutionary creatures. Creative by nature, creative by design, and creative via the creator, the human animal exercises its creative imagination to the process of survival, which has long-since included the discoveries of tools and systems that increase abilities and efficiencies.

Traditional thinking about business, management, and leadership, generally adhere to the premise of people aligning themselves along one path and towing the line indefinitely. The smartest and most successful leaders have learned something contrary to this long ago. People are what co-actively bring about change and make change easy or difficult. Knowing and understanding this makes a world of difference.

Rather than creating a system that forces adherence, create systems that can grow and evolve with people. The whole foundation of every organized system, whether an organization, technology, or process-flow, came about from the original desire in man to create something of value that makes life easier in Community.

Who is serving who?

How can we change the world?

This is such a big question upon so many people’s minds as they look around them to a world with so many issues that seem apparent to each particular individual. Note it is issues that seem apparent to each particular individual, as the experience of one reflects issues important to the individual. Each of us has a sense of heart-driven desire to see a positive outcome occur for our pet-world-issues, or causes. Does the enormity of the issues cause your heart to pause?

You can make a difference. We can all make a difference. It is so much easier when we can see where and how.

One Man Can, One Woman Can

Getting the changes we’d like to see happen in the world meet resistance as politics, cultures, and business appear to create blockades to creating change. When Princess Di passed, millions bought flowers, crowded streets, and lamented her loss and the lesser impact for change that represented.

And yet, were each of these millions to pick up one actionable item, to donate rather than buy flowers, the impact of these millions would have dramatically impacted the causes Princess Di pursued. The little things we can do, do make a difference.

How to Get Volunteers

Many organizations seeking to create positive change are often challenged to find the support in their communities. Getting volunteers out is a job that also requires financial and human resources, along with creative ideas to reach out and find the hearts that beat.

We the People create change, have power, as the old adage “United we stand, divided we fall” reminds us. Amassing ourselves to support our causes with real intent…. well, imagine the impact.

TimeRaiser: A Vision Whose Time has Come

First noted is the Vision of TimeRaiser:

Our vision for the Timeraiser is to make it the most memorable, engaging and impactful civic engagement program in the country.

Our hope is that, in a few years, thousands of Canadians will be able to trace their engagement in their community back to the Timeraiser. We want to plant the seeds of life-long civic involvement.

From 2008 through 2010, we will host 16 Timeraisers across the country, that generate 250,000 volunteer hours, engage 5,000 Canadians in the charitable sector, invest over $300,000 in the careers of emerging artists and enable the valuable work of hundreds of nonprofits.

The expansion to other Canadian cities does not come at the expense of going deep in the communities we are already in. The Timeraiser will play the role of catalyst, bringing the emerging concepts of community development to the audience of volunteers and agencies that participate. Our experience shows that when given the right opportunity, people who get involved, stay involved.

Finally, we will be developing really cool strategies to leverage the involvement of professionals in the fields of Human Resources, Accounting, Organizational Design and Information Technology to elevate and expand the Timeraiser programming.

Second, visit the TimeRaiser website to learn more, and Vancouverites, be ready for more.

Getting involved your community isn’t always easy. That’s why VOLUNTEER VANCOUVER and FRAMEWORK FOUNDATION are proud build on the successful 2008 program to co-host the 2nd Vancouver Timeraiser. The Timeraiser has made it simple for Canadians in their twenties and thirties to find meaningful opportunities to fit their busy lifestyles. After successfully launching campaigns in six Canadian cities, the 2nd Annual VANCOUVER TIMERAISER will be held on Thursday September 24th at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown.

What Others Say

Volunteer Vancouver’s Chair states:

No other Vancouver event impresses the depth of impact and richness of innovation. If the arts inspire your heart, community engagement uplifts your soul, and camaraderie nourishes your being, then Timeraiser is where you need to be” says Chilwin Cheng – host of the 2008 Vancouver Timeraiser, Chair of Volunteer Vancouver’s Board of Directors and Principle/founder of Legal Process Solutions

Love is the first item at the top of the list, as it always seems to be a central core to what gets discussed. However, this gets to it from a different angle. Your worth fighting for.

Love starts at home, we all know and understand this, even if we don’t all come from perfect homes. Heck, as adult parents, we judge ourselves pretty harshly too. In spite of all the failings and misery, we have it in us to overcome and still love them, accepting what is and that we will never change them.

Love starts at home wants you to look closer to home. If all the money in the world evaporated, the buildings, the cities, the conveniences, and all the things we identify ourselves with, what’s left? What home remains that you still occupy no matter what is happening, or where you are?

Love starts at home is starting with you. You are worth fighting for.

When things aren’t always going right, and you’ve become accustomed to bridging peace, or any other behavior that allows you to remain in a place that is unhealthy for your well-being, or your growth, you’ve got to start at home. The change happens, you reach in so you can reach out; in healthier ways.

Just a little random thinking tonight.
